Two People Shot, Two-Year-Old Child Grazed by Gunfire

The Birmingham Police Department has launched an Assault Investigation after two people were shot and a two-year-old child was grazed by gunfire in the 2900 Block of 29th Avenue North (Collegeville Housing Community). The incident occurred on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

Shortly after 6 PM, North Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call in the 2900 Block of 29th Avenue North.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed an adult female victim inside an apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers located a two-year-old girl who appeared to have been grazed by a bullet.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and then transported the adult female to UAB Hospital; BFR transported the child to Children’s Hospital.

The adult female has life-threatening injuries. The two-year-old child suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

While officers were on the scene, a 16-year-old male juvenile showed up at Children’s Hospital suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The juvenile suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is believed to have been involved in the initial incident.

The preliminary investigation has revealed we believe the 16-year-old male was with a party who was involved in a verbal argument with the adult female. Shots were exchanged between the adult female and the 16-year-old juvenile. The two-year-old child was an innocent bystander.
