Justifiable Death Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Cornell Dewayne Richardson. The incident
occurred on Sunday, April 30, 2023.

Investigators presented the information gathered to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as a Justified Death Investigation #5.

The Birmingham Police Department has 59 murders thus far in 2023.The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting
guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records,
and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and

Media Release 135 – Justifiable Death Ruling.

Homicide Investigation
(Media Release 90)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, May 1, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:
Cornell Dewayne Richardson, (24), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 10:40 PM, West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 3100 Block of Steiner Avenue Southwest on report of Shots Fired.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed an adult male lying on the ground near a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported the male to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned a second gunshot victim (Cornell Richardson) had been taken to Princeton Hospital by private vehicle. Princeton Hospital Staff pronounced him deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests both victims were shot at the original location, the 3100 block of Steiner Avenue Southwest.
Detectives are working to learn what took place.
