Media Release 14- Homicide Investigation- 4th Avenue North

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Thomas Lee Bailey, (31), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.  

At approximately 2:20 AM, multiple Shot Spotter alerts were activated in the 100 Block of 4th Avenue North.

A Birmingham Police officer working in an off-duty capacity heard the gunfire; our officer investigated the scene.

Upon further investigation, our officer observed an adult female victim near the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound; officers observed a vehicle nearby that had been struck by gunfire.

Inside the vehicle was an adult male (victim) who was unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased. BFR transported the adult female victim to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The preliminary investigation suggests multiple rounds were fired in the area. Officers observed spent shell casings in the roadway on 4th Avenue North.

Currently, there is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 6th murder investigation of 2023.
