Media Release 14-Two Arrest following Hostage Situation

Two Men Arrested Following a Domestic Hostage Situation

The Birmingham Police Department reports two men are in custody following a domestic hostage situation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.

At approximately 10:50 p.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to the 900 block of 45th Street North on report of a domestic disturbance. Officers arrived on the scene and learned a female victim was being held against her will by her boyfriend.

Officers also received reports the boyfriend was allegedly armed with a firearm and a second male was inside of the apartment. South Precinct officers requested assistance from the Birmingham Police Department’s Tactical Operations Precinct (T.O.P.). Shortly after 1:00 a.m., the female victim was able to escape from the apartment by climbing out of a window. Subsequently, T.O.P. officer’s negotiation efforts were successful and the two males surrendered peacefully. Both subjects were taken into custody. Officers learned the second male had an outstanding felony warrant with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel examined the victim; she suffered no serious physical injuries. Both suspects were transported to the Birmingham Police Administration Building for questioning.

Birmingham Police Department’s Special Victim’s Unit Detectives will present the facts of this case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review of any additional charges on the suspects in addition to their felony warrants.
