Homicide Investigation and Unclassified Death Investigation Launched in East Birmingham After Domestic Dispute Leaves Two Dead
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation and an unclassified death investigation after a domestic dispute leave two dead. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 8, 2023.
The deceased parties have been identified as:
- Alajah Fairfax, 20, B/F, of Birmingham, Alabama.
- Corey Denard Louis Jr., 19, B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Initial Calls and Officers Response
At approximately 6:05 PM, East Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call in the 6800 Block of 66th Street South.
Officers arrived on the scene and then observed Corey Louis Jr. lying unresponsive in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and then transported Corey Louis Jr. to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Responding officers on 66th Street South issued a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) bulletin for a vehicle that left the scene.
East Precinct officers were notified that a person was shot at Woodlawn High School (5620 1st Avenue North).
Officers arrived at Woodlawn High School and then observed a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle officers issued in the BOLO.
Officers approached the vehicle when they observed Alajah Fairfax lying unresponsive in the passenger’s seat of the vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Officers located a second adult female who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound; she is believed to have been the driver of the vehicle.
BFR responded to Woodlawn High School and then pronounced Alajah Fairfax deceased; BFR transported the second adult female to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers learned UAB Hospital Staff pronounced Corey Louis Jr. deceased.
Preliminary Investigation
The preliminary investigation has revealed that Alajah Fairfax and Corey Louis Jr. share a child-in-common. The two were involved in a domestic dispute in the 6800 Block of 66th Street South. During the dispute, Corey Louis Jr. fired shots at Alajah Fairfax and the second adult female. Both female victims were struck by gunfire and then fled the scene in a vehicle later stopping at Woodlawn High School.
Community members then observed Corey Louis Jr. lying unresponsive in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
BPD Homicide detectives spoke to witnesses at BPD Headquarters.
Death of Corey Louis Jr.
After conducting a preliminary investigation, BPD Homicide detectives are investigating the death of Corey Louis Jr. as an unclassified death. Detectives have reasons to believe Corey’s gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted.
The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on both parties; the autopsy will help determine the manner of death in the case of Corey Louis Jr.
