Arrest Made in Norwood Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of a 36-year-old mother (awaiting proper next of kin notification).

The victim was shot and killed on Friday, July 7, 2023, while in the 3200 Block of 17th Avenue North.

The suspect has been identified as:

Aaniyah Nowden, (21), B/F, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder (victim’s child and/or children were present).

Aaniyah Nowden was taken into custody on the scene.

Aaniyah Nowden is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.

NOTE: The Capital Murder charge is described in the statute below.  

Section 13A-5-40 (20)

Murder by the defendant in the presence of a child under the age of 14 years at the time of the offense if the victim was the parent or legal guardian of the child. For purposes of this subsection, “in the presence of a child” means in the physical presence of a child or having knowledge that a child is present and may see or hear the act.

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, July 7, 2023.

The victim will be identified after notification to the next of kin.

At approximately 6:55 PM, North Precinct officers were dispatched to apartment complex in the 3200 Block of 17th Avenue North on report of a Person Shot.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed an adult female lying unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and then transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On Saturday, July 8, 2023, UAB Hospital staff pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was involved in a verbal argument with an adult female suspect. During the argument, the suspect shot the victim.

North Precinct officers detained the female suspect and a separate male for questioning. North Precinct officers transported the suspect and the adult male to BPD Headquarters for questioning.

After being interviewed, the female suspect was booked into the Birmingham City Jail under a 48-Hour Felony Extension for Capital Murder.

The victim and suspect both have a child with the same male.
