Double Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a double homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 15, 2023.

The victims have been identified as:

  1. Daryl Jones, (62), B/M, of Gardendale, Alabama.
  2. Lee Ross (71), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 11 PM, West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1700 Block of 48th Street Ensley on report of a Shot Spotter Alert. The call was updated to Two People Shot.

Officers arrived on the scene and then entered the backyard of a residence when they observed the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and then transported both victims to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. UAB Hospital Staff pronounced both victims deceased.

The preliminary investigation revealed both victims were at a residence when an unknown suspect(s) fired shots at them. We believe at least one of the victims was targeted.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 69th and 70th murder investigation of 2023 with 6 justifiable death investigations). The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
