Arrest Made in the Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Renard West. He was shot and killed on Friday, July 5, 2024, in the 1000 Block of Cottan Avenue.

The suspect has been identified as:

Kishande Huckabee, (24), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Community members provided our patrol officers with a clothing description of the suspect. Officers observed an adult male matching the clothing description walking in the area. Officers took the suspect into custody; the suspect was armed with a handgun.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder on Huckabee.

Kishande Huckabee is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail where he is being held with No Bond.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 159)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, July 5, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Renard West, (55), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 4:40 a.m., West Precinct officers were dispatched to a Shot Spotter call in the 1000 Block of Cotton Avenue. Officers were updated that a person was shot at the location.

Officers arrived on the scene when they observed the victim lying unresponsive in the front yard of a residence. The victim had been shot.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.

Community members provided our patrol officers with a clothing description of the suspect. Officers observed an adult male matching the clothing description walking in the area. Officers took the suspect into custody; the suspect was armed with a handgun.

Officers transported the suspect to BPD Headquarters where Homicide detectives will interview the suspect.
