Media Release 161- Homicide Investigation-8th Avenue Wylam

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Cedric Reese, (58), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.  

At approximately 2 PM, West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 5-Way gas station, 4800 8th Avenue Wylam, on report of an Assault.

Officers arrived on the scene and then learned a known suspect had struck the victim with an object. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene. The victim did not want to be transported to a hospital.

A community member found the victim unresponsive the following day at his residence in the 4700 Block of 5th Avenue Wylam. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him deceased.

The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the victim and determined his death was the result of injuries sustained during the assault.

Suspect Arrested

A patrol officer was able to identify the suspect involved.

The suspect has been identified as:

Lawanza Dynail McCormick, (45), B/M, of Bessemer, Alabama.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives obtained a warrant for Murder.

On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the BPD Crime Reduction Team took the suspect into custody; he was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held with No Bond.
