BPD Investigating a 4-Year-Old Child Shot
(Media Release 143)
The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a 4-year-old child in the Smithfield Community. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
Just before 2 PM, Community Safety Partnership (CSP) officers were in the Smithfield Housing Community greeting community members when they were approached by someone stating an infant had been shot.
Officers went to an apartment in the 800 Block of 1st Street North when they observed a 4-year-old girl suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and then transported the victim to Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation has revealed the apartment was occupied with at least one additional person besides the victim. We do not believe the apartment was shot into. Detectives have not ruled out this being a result of an accidental shooting.
We will provide additional updates as updates become available.
