Person Found Deceased in House Fire ruled a Homicide

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday July 8, 2021.

The victim has been identified as Bennie Harris, (47), b/m, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to 3753 Todd Avenue on a house fire. After extinguishing the fire Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel discovered the victim Bennie Harris inside his residence deceased. It was later determined by the Jefferson County Coroner the victim sustained a gunshot wound that proved to be fatal.

Details are limited in this investigation. No arrest has been made. Investigators are enlisting the assistance of the public.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
