Media Release 165- Homicide Investigation-4th Avenue Southwest

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, August 4, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Rahkeem Darnell Vanderbilt, (32), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama,

At approximately 6:55 PM, South Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call at #10 4th Avenue Southwest.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed shell casings and blood on the ground. Officers learned three adult male gunshot victims had been transported to UAB Hospital by private vehicle.

UAB Hospital Staff pronounced Rahkeem Vanderbilt deceased. A second adult male victim suffered life-threatening injuries. A third adult male victim has suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A Person Shot call also went out in the 500 Block of 6th Avenue South. Officers arrived on the scene and then observed an adult male suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. This incident was not connected to the scene on 4th Avenue Southwest.

The preliminary investigation from 4th Avenue Southwest suggests the three adult male victims were standing outside, hanging out, when an unknown suspect(s) fired shots at them.

There is no one in custody.

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
