Media Release 165-Homicide Investigation -Interstate 65(I-65) North

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Jonathan Lenair Bradberry, (55), B/M, of Gardendale, Alabama.

At approximately 10:55 p.m., North Precinct officers responded to a call of a single vehicle collision on Interstate 65 (I-65) North and 32nd Avenue exit. While en route, the call was updated to a person shot.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital. Shortly after arrival, the victim was pronounced deceased by UAB medical staff.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was traveling on I-65 North when shots were fired into his vehicle, wounding the victim. Construction workers heard shots being fired, and shortly after the vehicle crashed into the highway’s concrete median.

It is unknown if the victim was the intended target.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 74th murder investigation of 2024 with 8 justifiable death investigations.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
