Homicide Investigation Update / Reclassification
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection with a homicide investigation. The shooting occurred on Sunday January 19, 2020, at approximately 5:25 p.m.
The identification of the deceased will be released upon notification of immediate family.
Officers from the East Precinct responded to a call of a person shot at 3901 Pinson Valley Parkway. Upon arrival officers discovered a person suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the victim to UAB hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.
Upon further investigation detectives received information that a verbal altercation ensued between two people which lead to shots being fired. One of the shooters fled into a wooded area nearby. BPD K-9 unit responded to the scene and discovered a person unresponsive in the wooded area. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue along with Jefferson County Coroner.
BPD Homicide Investigators presented the information gathered on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment of the information, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office ruled the actions of the subject involved were justified as defense. This investigation is reclassified as Justified Death.
There will be no criminal charges to follow.
