Woman in Custody, Found Unresponsive in Birmingham City Jail Cell
The Birmingham Police Department reports that a woman in custody was pronounced deceased after being found unresponsive in the Birmingham City Jail. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.
Just after 10 p.m., Birmingham City Jail staff discovered Tambrala Smith, 53, of Helena, Alabama, unresponsive in her cell. A Birmingham City Jail nurse performed CPR on Tambrala Smith. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced her deceased.
Birmingham Police Department personnel did not observe any signs of foul play.
South Precinct officers took Smith into custody on Monday, August 7, 2023, at around 9:30 p.m., in the 200 Block of Oxmoor Place. She was charged with Public Intoxication.
Chief Thurmond has requested the assistance of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
