BPD Officer Injured During Vehicle Pursuit

A BPD Officer was injured during a vehicle pursuit. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

At around 2:05 p.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to a business in the 3400 Block of 4th Avenue South on report of a “Theft Suspect Who Had Returned to the Location.”

The suspect reportedly had stolen thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the business in recent days.

Officers arrived on the scene and then observed the suspect flee in a vehicle. Officers caught up with the suspect’s vehicle near the business and initiated a traffic stop; the suspect refused to stop and then a vehicle pursuit ensued.

The pursuit went eastbound until ending in the 6800 Block of 2nd Avenue South when the suspect’s vehicle collided with an East Precinct officer’s patrol vehicle. Officers took the suspect (adult male) into custody.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported our officer to a local area hospital. The suspect was also transported to a local area hospital. Both transported parties did not have any visible injuries.

BPD Crimes Against Property detectives are investigating this incident.

The suspect was booked into the Birmingham City Jail under a 48-Hour Felony Extension.
