Media Release 173- Homicide Update- Eufaula Avenue

Homicide Investigation Update

The Birmingham Police Department reports the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a homicide that occurred on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

The victim has been identified as:

Nathan Gemeinhart, (42), W/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained warrants for an arrest in connection to Nathan Gemeinhart’s murder.

The suspect has been identified as:

Youit De Witt Jones, 35, B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained warrants for Capital Murder (Kidnapping) & Arson.

Youit De Witt Jones is currently in the custody of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office in Ardmore, OK on unrelated charges pending extradition.

He will be held in the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.

Person of Interest in Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 163)

 The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have upgraded the arson/unclassified death investigation on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, to a Homicide Investigation.

The Birmingham Police Department is requesting immediate assistance from our media partners and the public in locating a person of interest in this case.

Person of interest:

Youit De Witt Jones, 35, B/M, 6’0’’ 185 Pounds, NO LONGER HAS DREADLOCKS, he now has a bald head.

Vehicle Possibly Traveling in:

AL License Plate: ISA2106

Black 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 CREW

If anyone observes the person of interest DIAL 911 IMMEDIATELY or remain anonymous by dialing Crime Stoppers @ (205) 254-7777.

The person of interest is considered Armed & Dangerous.

Arson / Unclassified Death Investigation

(Media Release 162)

 The Birmingham Police Department is conducting an arson / unclassified death investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

 The victim will be identified upon notification to the next of kin.

At approximately 2:45 AM, West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1300 Block of Eufaula Avenue on report of a house fire. Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel also responded to the scene when they observed an abandoned house engulfed in flames.

BFR extinguished the flames; firefighters discovered a human body inside of the abandoned house.

Currently, we have not ruled out foul play in this investigation. The Jefferson Coroner’s Office will take care and custody of the victim. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the manner of death in this case.
