Reclassification of Justifiable Ruling Update

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in the homicide of Author Swift, (60), b/m of Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred on Monday, November 22, 2021.

 Detectives presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as a Justified Death Investigation.

The Birmingham Police Department investigated 116 murders and conducted 15 justifiable death investigations in 2021.

 The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

Homicide Investigation

Media Release 286 of 2021

 

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

The has been identified as Author Swift, 60, b/m of Birmingham, Al.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of 29th Avenue North on the report of a person down in the roadway reportedly struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived on the scene and observed a male victim lying unresponsive in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Currently, there is no one in custody. Details are limited at this time.
