Arrest Made in the James White Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of James White. He was shot and killed on Monday, August 12, 2024, at the Anchor Motel (8419 1st Avenue North).

The suspect has been identified as:

Noel Ashford, (44), B/M, of Hoover, Alabama. 

BPD’s Crime Reduction Team and Narcotics Unit arrested Ashford on the day of the shooting.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder.

Noel Ashford is in the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 185)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, August 12, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

James White, (45), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama. 

Just after 9:30 a.m., East Precinct officers responded to a call of a Person Shot at 8419 1st Avenue North, Anchor Motel.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed an adult male victim lying in the parking lot unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 10:29 a.m. by UAB medical staff.

The preliminary investigation suggests a physical altercation occurred between the victim and the suspect in the parking lot. The suspect then fired shots, fatally wounding the victim, and left the scene in a vehicle. A witness attempted life-saving measures before BFRS arrived.

The suspect is in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 90th murder investigation of 2024 with 8 justifiable death investigations.
