Attempt to Identify Person of Interest in the Genise Carter Capital Murder/Kidnapping Investigation

Detectives request assistance from the public in identifying a person of interest in the attached photos. The male shown is a person of interest in the capital murder of Genise Carter, who was kidnapped and then later found shot and killed on Thursday, January 15, 2024, in the 1200 Block of 18th Street North.

Arrest Made in the Genise Carter Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 18)

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained warrants for an arrest in connection to the murder of Genise Carter. Genise Carter was found shot and killed on Thursday, January 15, 2024, in the 1200 Block of 18th Street North.

The suspect has been identified as:

Jayden Gildersleeve, (21), B/M, of Midfield, Alabama. 

On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, BPD detectives, with the assistance of BPD’s Crime Reduction Team, City Wide Traffic Task Force officers, Community Safety Partnership officers, and Jefferson County Sheriff Office’s Star One helicopter, took Jayden Gildersleeve into custody in the 200 Block of 3rd Avenue Southwest.

On Thursday, February 1, 2024, Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained warrants for Capital Murder (Kidnapping) and Kidnapping 1st Degree.

Jayden Gildersleeve is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail and has No Bond.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 17)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, January 15, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Genise Carter, (43), B/F, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 8:20 a.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1200 Block of 18th Street North on report of a Body Found.

A Birmingham City worker observed the victim and then dialed 911.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office took care and custody of the victim.

The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the victim that revealed the victim had been shot.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 5th murder investigation of 2024.
