Media Release 201 – Homicide Investigation – 200 Block 16th St S

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 2, 2022.

The victim has been identified as:

Malik Shelton, (26), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 5:01 PM, Birmingham 9-1-1 received call regarding a person shot in the 200 block 16th Street S. Upon arrival officers discovered the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived to render aid; however, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.

An adult male and adult female were walking in the 200 block when there was a verbal altercation between the victim and the two pedestrians which led to the shooting. Both pedestrians remained on scene and cooperated with detectives regarding the investigation.

An adult suspect is in custody.
