Media Release 207- Homicide Investigation- 16th Street Southwest

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is now conducting a homicide investigation after the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy in an unclassified death investigation (Media Release 203).

The victim has been identified as:

Darrius Dewayne Brown, (33), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office arrived on the scene and then took care and custody of the victim. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the victim, revealing the victim had been shot.

Darrius Brown was previously a Missing Persons case with BPD.

This is Birmingham’s 92nd murder investigation of 2023 with 7 justifiable death investigations). The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.

Unclassified Death Investigation

(Media Release 203)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting an unclassified death investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 28, 2023.

The victim will be identified by the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office.  

Just before 2 p.m., West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1500 Block of Tuscaloosa Avenue on report of a Community Member Who Discovered a Body.

Officers arrived on the scene and then were led to the 500 Block of 16th Street Southwest where they observed a decomposed body in a field near the alleyway.

The victim could not be identified.

Officers observed suspicious circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.

Homicide and Special Victims Unit detectives responded to the scene.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office arrived on the scene and then took care and custody of the victim. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the victim to determine the cause of death.
