Arrest Made in the Homicide Investigation of Cedric Mahaffey
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained warrants for two arrests in connection to the murder of Cedric Mahaffey. Cedric Mahaffey was shot and killed on August 20, 2022, while in the 500 Block of Francis Place Southwest.
The suspects have been identified as:
- Joshua Jermaine Burns, (20), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
- Jayveon Khiry Fleming, (18), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
On Friday, September 30, 2022, Birmingham Police detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder on Jayveon Fleming.
Through the course of the investigation, detectives discovered the pair stole Mahaffey’s white sedan and used it to travel to Sunnyvale, California. Both suspects were arrested on a robbery attempt by the Santa Clara (Ca) Police Department. They are currently being held at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, California. BPD Homicide detectives traveled to California where they met with the agencies who assisted in the arrest as well as conducted interviews with witnesses and both suspects.
After traveling to California, and conducting interviews, detectives obtained a Capital Murder warrant on Joshua Burns. Both suspects have No Bond on their Capital Murder (Alabama) warrants.
They are currently awaiting extradition to the Jefferson County Jail.

The Birmingham Police Department reports a homicide investigation is underway in the 500 block of Francis Place Southwest.
On Saturday, August 20, 2022, at approximately 8:42 p.m., officers from the West Precinct were dispatched to the location on a ShotSpotter alert of one round fired. Officers arrived on scene and were alerted to a person unresponsive in a front room of a residence. The victim sustained a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced the victim deceased.
The victim has been identified as:
Cedric Mahaffey, (29), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
The preliminary investigation suggests a single gunshot was heard prior to the discovery of the wounded victim. Additional details are limited at this phase of the investigation. No arrest has been made. Updates will be provided as this case develops.
