Homicide Investigation Update

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim in a homicide that occurred on Sunday, September 20, 2020 in the 300 block of 72nd Street North.

The victim has been identified as Melvin Nelson, (59), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The homicide occurred on Sunday September 20, 2020.

The victim will be identified after next of kin notification.

At approximately 2:05 a.m., the Birmingham Police Department’s 911 Communication Division received a Shot Spotter call of one round fired in the 300 block of 72ND Street North. Officers from East Precinct responded to the scene and discovered the victim

unresponsive lying on the curb near the roadway. The victim suffered from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and rescue reported to the scene where the victim was pronounced deceased.

Detectives have limited information in this homicide investigation. There are no suspect(s) in custody. Detectives have not established a motive. Updates will be provided as information comes available.
