Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, September 21, 2020.
The victim has been identified as Garland Perry, (86), B/F, of Birmingham, Alabama. At approximately 8:43 a.m., officer from West Precinct responded to 1633 Brookfield Lane on reports of a person assaulted. Officers arrived and was alerted by the victim’s daughter that her mother was inside the residence severely wounded. Officers entered and observed the victim Garland Perry inside the residence suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The victim succumb to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates the brother of the victim stabbed her multiple times. The suspect left the residence on foot and was found hiding underneath a large cactus bush nearby. The suspect was apprehended and transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment and evaluation. The suspect will remain in guarded custody pending release from the hospital and will transported to jail thereafter. Updates will be provided as additional information comes available. This is Birmingham’s 74th homicide investigation of 2020 and 14 justifiable death investigations and 1 non-criminal homicide (accidental shooting). The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to
include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts. The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed
