Officer Injured After SUV Crashes into BPD Patrol Car

The Birmingham Police Department reports an officer has been injured after an SUV crashed into a BPD patrol car on Interstate 65 North. The incident occurred on Friday, October 20, 2023.

Just after Midnight, two North Precinct officers, in separate patrol cars, were blocking traffic for a disabled vehicle on Interstate 65 North just before the Daniel Payne Drive Exit when an SUV crashed into one of the officer’s patrol cars, while our officer was inside the vehicle.

The non-injured officer radioed in the incident to our 911 Communications Division.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and then assessed both the driver of the SUV and our injured patrol officer.

BFR transported our injured patrol officer to a local area hospital; it appears our officer may have suffered a concussion and additional head and neck injuries. Our officer’s injuries are non-life threatening. The driver of the SUV was not injured.

North Precinct officers took the driver of the SUV into custody under the suspicion he was Driving Under the Influence; officers transported the adult male driver to the Birmingham City Jail where he was booked in for D.U.I.

The Birmingham Police Department wishes a speedy recovery to our injured officer.

Thank you, Birmingham Fire and Rescue for your assistance during this incident.
