Justifiable Death Ruling in the Dametrice Broadnax Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Dametrice Broadnax. The incident occurred on Monday, February 5, 2024. Investigators presented case information to the Jefferson County District

Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the homicide justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as

Justified Death Investigation #1.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 21)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, February 5, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Dametrice Broadnax, (30), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 2:35 a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call at a residence in the 8100 Block of 4th Avenue South.

Officers arrived on the scene and then entered the residence when they discovered the victim lying unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend (adult female). The victim’s girlfriend shot him and then dialed 911.

The victim’s girlfriend remained on the scene; patrol officers took her into custody.

A small child was inside the residence at the time of the shooting; the child was unharmed.

Patrol officers transported the adult female to BPD Headquarters for questioning.

BPD Homicide detectives interviewed the adult female; patrol officers transported her to the Birmingham City Jail and she was booked under a 48-Hour Felony Extension.

BPD detectives will present case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office who then will decide if criminal charges should be filed.
