Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Update
The Birmingham Police Department reports the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased subject that was fatally wounded during an officer involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
The deceased has been identified as
Eusi Malik Kater Jr., (21), b/m, of Birmingham, Alabama.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigations will take the lead in this Officer Involved Shooting Investigation. Additional information will be provided as it comes available.

At approximately 2:14 p.m., officers from South Precinct responded to the vicinity of the 100 block of 5th Avenue South West on a ShotSpotter call. The Birmingham 911 Communications Division also received calls of a male firing a weapon at another person. Officers responded and attempted to make contact with the suspect. The suspect fled on foot and shots were fired. The suspect fled to a residence in the 600 block of Center Place South West and took a tactical position on the porch.
The Birmingham Police Department deployed additional resources such as Star One Aviation Support and the Tactical Operations Division. In the attempted de-escalate, additional shots were fired at officers. Ultimately, the suspect was shot and wounded by officers. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel was staged on scene and immediately rendered aid. The suspect was transported to UAB Hospital with serious injuries. The suspects injuries proved to be fatal and he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
A handgun was recovered on scene.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation will be the lead investigative agency.
