Fatal Vehicle Accident Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports that an employee of the Birmingham Police Department was fatally injured in a vehicle accident that occurred on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. The accident occurred at 5604 5th Street North in Lipscomb and is currently under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
The deceased has been identified as:
Lateral Police Transfer Alfara Torez Franklin Sr., 37, of Midfield, Alabama.
Alfara Franklin transferred to the Birmingham Police Department with15 years of law enforcement experience from the Fairfield Police Department. Franklin’s law enforcement career began with the Lipscomb Police Department before moving to the Brighton Police Department. Franklin later transferred to the Moody Police Department before relocating to the Midfield Police Department and eventually landing at the Fairfield Police Department.
Franklin was hired by the Birmingham Police Department in September of 2019 and began his lateral transfer training at the Birmingham Police Academy on Monday, September 30, 2019. Franklin is the father of 4 children.
Franklin was not on duty at the time of the accident.
