Inmate Death at Birmingham City Jail

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting an investigation after the death of an inmate. Our investigation is preliminary and standard procedure on all in custody deaths.

On Thursday, December 22, 2022, a female inmate housed at the Birmingham City Jail was found unresponsive at 2:50pm after corrections officers conducted a routine cell check. A jail nurse was immediately called to the cell and attempted to resuscitate the inmate while awaiting Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Birmingham Fire and Rescue was not able to revive the inmate and she was pronounced deceased at 3:17 pm. The inmate was housed alone in her cell. This an unclassified death until a final assessment from the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The inmate had been housed at the Birmingham City Jail since Tuesday, December 13, 2022, for Driving Under the Influence and traffic warrants.

The identity of the inmate will be withheld until notification of the next of kin.

**The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**
