Homicide Investigation

 The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are currently conducting a homicide investigation.  The incident occurred on Thursday, December 10, 2020.

The victim’s identity will be released upon proper identification and notification of next of kin.

 At approximately 3:20 p.m., the 911 Communications Division received a call of smoke emitting from an abandoned building located at 816 2nd Ave North. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and extinguished a small fire inside the building. After the fire was extinguished, Birmingham Fire and Rescue discovered the victim’s body.

The preliminary investigation findings are indicative of a homicide. Detectives believe an altercation occurred prior to the victim being fatally wounded, decapitated, and set on fired. The Birmingham Police Department does have a person of interest in custody. Updates will be provided as this cased develops.

 This is homicide 101 of 2020 with 13 justifiable death investigations and 1 non-criminal homicide (accidental shooting). The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
