Memorial of Retired Officer Randall Versie Smith

The Birmingham Police Department reports Retired Officer Randall Versie Smith passed on Monday, December 29, 2020. Officer Randall Versie Smith affectionately known as “Randy” began his career with the Birmingham Police Department on January 4, 1988.

On March 22, 1995, Smith along with other officers responded to a domestic dispute in Ensley. While responding to the call for service, Officer Smith heroically rescued a toddler during the incident involving an armed person. On this call Smith was accidently wounded by the gunfire of a fellow officer. Due to the injuries sustained, Officer Smith was unable to return to duty. Smith medically retired from the Birmingham Police Department on February 2, 1996.

Randall Smith recently suffered a fall at his home resulting in him being hospitalized. Smith ultimately succumbed on Monday, December 29, 2020. The memorial service for Former Officer Randall Versie Smith has been entrusted to the care of Ride Out’s Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., at Waldrop Stadium, 266 Snow Drive, Homewood, AL 35209. This service is open to the public.

All other proceedings will remain private per the family’s request.
