Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, December 3, 2021.

The victim has been identified as:
Dewayne Lenard Barnes, (28), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., West Precinct officers were in the area of the 4100 block of Avenue M when they heard gunshots being fired. Shot Spotter alerts also were activated and were sent to the Birmingham 911 Communications Division. Officers drove around in the area; they observed the victim lying unresponsive in the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Details are limited in this investigation.
