Homicide Investigation Update
The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have received a ruling in connection with a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, August 19, 2019 at approximately 8:41 p.m.
The deceased has been identified as:
Calvin Vance, B/M, 18, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Officers from the West Precinct responded to the 1000 block of Gulfport Street, Wylam to investigate a Shot Spotter call of shots fired. As officers responded, additional calls of shots fired were received from citizens in the area. Upon arrival, officers observed the deceased person lying on the edge of the roadway unresponsive. The victim appeared to have suffered an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.
BPD Homicide Investigators located and interviewed the persons involved in the altercation with the deceased. Detectives presented the information gathered during the investigation to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment of the information, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office ruled the shooting as justifiable.
It was found that the deceased was attempting to rob a subject/shooter just before the shooting.
No warrants will be pursued in this investigation.
