Quadruple Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a quadruple homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, February 16, 2024.

The victims have been identified as:

  1. Cortez Ray, (32), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
  2. Talton Tate, (36), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
  3. Terrell Edwards, (38), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
  4. Kevin McGhee, (38), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Just before 2:45 p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a Shot Spotter alert of multiple rounds fired near the 900 Block of Center Street North. Officers were updated that four people were shot at the location.

Officers arrived on the scene and then observed the four victims lying unresponsive on the ground near an open lot. The victims were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the following victims deceased: Cortez Ray, Talton Tate, and Terrell Edwards. BFR personnel transported Kevin McGhee to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. UAB Hospital Staff pronounced Mr. McGhee deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victims were at a neighborhood car wash when an unknown suspect(s) opened fire on them. We believe one or more of the victims were targeted.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 9th,10th, 11th, and 12th murder investigation of 2024 with 1 justifiable death ruling.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
