Public’s Assistance with the Yalunda Watts-Young Homicide Investigation

Detectives request assistance from the public in obtaining information on a homicide that occurred on Sunday, February 20, 2022, that claimed the life of Yalunda Watts-Young.

At approximately 10:36 p.m.,  North Precinct officers were dispatched to two people shot in the 600 Block of 9th Street North.

Officers arrived on the scene and then discovered the victim and an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported both victims to UAB Hospital. Yalunda Watts-Young had life-threatening injuries.  UAB Hospital staff pronounced Mrs. Watts-Young deceased. The adult male survived his injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests both victims were leaving an establishment when shots were fired at them. One of the victims was targeted; however, a motive has not been established.

No arrest has been made.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 36-2022)

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

The victim has been identified as:

Yalunda Watts-Young, (43), B/F, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 10:36 p.m.,  North Precinct officers were dispatched to two people shot in the 600 Block of 9th Street North.

Officers arrived on the scene and then discovered the victim and an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.
