Justifiable Death Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Raul Angel Cajigas Jr. The incident occurred on Monday, February 26, 2024.

Investigators presented the information gathered to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as Justified Death Investigation #3.

The Birmingham Police Department has 17 murders in 2024.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, February 26, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Raul Angel Cajigas Jr., (23), H/M, of Hoover, Alabama. 

At approximately 9:45 p.m. South Precinct Officers were responding to a ShotSpotter activation in the 200 Block of 3rd Avenue SW. While en route, the call was updated to a person shot.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim lying on the sidewalk unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Details in this case are limited.
