Arrest Made in the Willie Carr Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Willie Carr. Willie Carr was shot and killed on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in the 1100 Block of Cotton Avenue Southwest.
The suspect has been identified as:
James Burdette, (30), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, after the shooting, James Burdette stole a food truck and then drove to a gas station in Chilton County where he was arrested by Chilton County deputies. West Precinct officers transported him from Chilton County to the Birmingham City Jail where he was placed on a 48-Hour Felony Extension
Birmingham Police Homicide detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder.
James Burdette is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail and is being held with No Bond.
Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
The victim has been identified as:
Willie Carr, (56), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
At approximately 7:44 p.m., West Precinct officers were responding to a Person Shot call at a residence in the 1100 Block of Cotton Avenue SW.
When officers arrived on the scene, they entered the residence and observed the victim unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests the family was gathered at the residence for a barbecue. The suspect, who was also attending, became angry and began firing gunshots and striking the victim. The suspect then left the scene.
No one else was injured.
The suspect is now in custody.
