John Wade Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department would like to provide information to the public about a serious incident involving former police officer Mr. John Wade.
In December 2023, Mr. Wade was removed from service immediately on the day the serious allegations were brought to our attention.
Our Internal Affairs Division and Crimes Against Persons Unit each conducted separate thorough investigations into the allegations. Upon completion of both investigations, Mr. Wade resigned before termination.
Investigators also presented case information to the District Attorney’s Office to pursue criminal charges.
Immediately following Mr. Wade’s resignation, the Birmingham Police Department made a formal request to the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission to revoke Mr. Wade’s certification.
It is important to ensure the community that the Birmingham Police Department has taken appropriate action in this investigation. Chief Scott Thurmond believes transparency and accountability to our community will always remain our goal.
**The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**
