Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
The victim has been identified as:
Byron McNeal Jr., (28), B/M, of Bessemer, Alabama.
Just before 4 p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call near 2nd Street North @ 6th Avenue North.
Officers arrived on the scene and then observed the victim lying unresponsive in the roadway; he was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
UAB Hospital staff pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was shot in the area of 2nd Street North @ 6th Avenue North. Investigators are working to determine what events led to the victim being shot.
There is no one in custody.
