Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on March 12, 2020.

 The victim will be identified upon notification of next of kin.

 At approximately 1:00 p.m., Officers from the East Precinct responded to 7720 1st Ave South on a call of a person shot. Officers arrived and discovered the victim lying on the ground suffering for an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the victim to UAB hospital with life threatening injuries. Detectives were later notified that the victim succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

The preliminary investigation suggest the victim and the suspect were involved in a verbal altercation before the suspect shot the victim. The victim attempted to flee on foot before he collapsed. BPD has one person in custody in connection to this homicide. This is an ongoing investigation.

 This is Birmingham’s 19th homicide investigation of 2020 and 4 justifiable death investigations. The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts
