Media Release 63

Homicide Investigation
(Please see Media Release 62)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
The victim will be identified upon notice to the next of kin.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the 142 Woodstation Place on report of an apartment fire. Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and extinguished the flames. Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel conducted a search of the apartment where they located a victim lying unresponsive near a doorway. The victim was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim suffered a gunshot wound. There are no suspect(s) in custody at this time.
The Jefferson County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the victim to determine a cause of death.

This is Birmingham’s 17th murder investigation of 2021. The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting
guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

**The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**

 

Unclassified Death Investigation
(Media Release 62)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting an unclassified death investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, March 4, 2021. The victim will be identified upon notice to the next of kin.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the 100 block of Woodstation Place on report of an apartment fire. Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and extinguished the flames. Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel conducted a search of the apartment where they located a victim lying unresponsive near a doorway. The victim was pronounced deceased on the scene.

BPD detectives are working to determine if foul play was involved in this incident. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the victim to determine a cause of death.
