Homicide Investigation Update

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.  The incident occurred on March 26, 2020.

The victim has been identified as:  Kahlia Duquan Sturdivant, (33), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 1:20 p.m., Officers from the East Precinct responded to the 7800 block of 1st Ave North on a call of a person shot.  Officers arrived and discovered the victim lying on the ground in the alley suffering for an apparent gunshot wound.  Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the victim to UAB hospital with life threatening injuries.  Detectives were later notified that the victim succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

There is limited information in this investigation.  Detectives have not established a motive.  There are no suspect(s) in custody.  This is an ongoing investigation.

This is Birmingham’s 20th homicide investigation of 2020 and 4 justifiable death investigations.  The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States.  FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
