Justifiable Death Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Quintez Ladd. The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in the 900 Block of 20th Street Ensley.

Detectives learned Quintez Ladd was armed and then exchanged shots with an adult male. Both adult males were struck by gunfire. Quintez Ladd was killed in the exchange of gunfire. The second adult male suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators presented the information gathered to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as Justified Death Investigation #4.

The Birmingham Police Department has 31 murders thus far in 2024.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 62)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

At approximately 4:22 p.m., West Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call at 900 20th Street in the Ensley community.

The victim has been identified as:

Quintez Deshawn Ladd, (25), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim lying on the ground unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While on the scene officers were notified that a second adult male arrived at the hospital by private vehicle, suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation suggests a verbal altercation occurred between the two individuals outside in the parking lot of a business that led to the exchange of gunfire.

Investigators will prepare case information and present it to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
