Birmingham Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation Join Forces on the Ongoing Homicide Investigation of Areyelle Yarbrough

On Monday, April 10th, 2023, the Birmingham Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be holding a joint press conference regarding the homicide investigation of Areyelle Yarbrough. The press conference will be held at Patton Park (1200 Sipsey St, Birmingham, Al 35212) at 11 a.m. Areyelle Yarbrough was a victim of a homicide that occurred on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, where multiple people were shot in Patton Park.

Both agencies are pulling together additional resources to help solve the case and bring closure to the family that lost their loved one due to this act of violence. Chief Scott Thurmond, Birmingham Police Department’s Police Chief, shares his thoughts of why this press conference is needed. “It has been two years since Areyelle Yarbrough’s life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. Areyelle, along with many others, were enjoying a beautiful day in the park when two groups began shooting at one another, which ultimately resulted in her being struck by a stray bullet. We know there are several people who were in the park and witnessed this tragic event. The Birmingham Police Department along with the FBI are asking those who have information about this homicide to contact us directly at (205)-254-1764 or CrimeStoppers at (205) 254-7777” stated Chief Thurmond.

“I hope today’s reward announcement of the FBI offering $30,000 dollars for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her murder, continues to highlight our partnership and our commitment to this community to hold her killers responsible and bring justice to her family,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton Peeples. “The FBI has two things going for us in these types of cases…. a very long memory and a dogged commitment to run down every lead. We not only owe it to her family, but we also owe it to this community…and we owe it to Areyelle’s memory.”
