Homicide Investigation / Seven People Shot

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after seven people were shot. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

David Westbrook, (24), B/M, of Wartrace, Tennessee.

Just after 2 a.m., North and West Precinct officers were dispatched to multiple Shot Spotter alerts in the 700-800 Block of 3rd Avenue West.

Officers arrived in the 700 Block of 3rd Avenue West when they observed a white sedan that had crashed into a utility pole. Officers observed the victim inside the vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

Officers arrived in the 800 Block of 3rd Avenue West (Shell Gas Station) when they observed an adult male lying unresponsive in the parking lot.

BFR arrived at the Shell Gas Station and transported the adult male to UAB Hospital; he has life-threatening injuries.

While officers were on both scenes, they learned two adult male gunshot victims arrived at Princeton Hospital by private vehicle. Officers also learned two additional adult male gunshot victims arrived at UAB Hospital by private vehicle. Around 10:30 a.m., West Precinct officers learned a 7th adult male gunshot victim had just arrived at Princeton Hospital by private vehicle.

There are a total of 7 adult male gunshot victims:

  • 1 deceased
  • 1 with life-threatening injuries
  • 5 with non-life-threatening injuries

The preliminary investigation has revealed that at least two parties were shooting at each other when multiple victims, vehicles, and one business (Boston Fish Supreme) were struck by gunfire. There may have been over 150 rounds fired during this incident

Operation Knight Rider officers arrived and assisted patrol officers in taking two adult males (persons of interest) into custody for questioning. Both men were observed fleeing the scene and trying to toss firearms.

Currently, there are no suspects in custody.
